Plans for a new CCTV system set to be installed across Cumbria could be extended in order to cover more areas, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.
A £2.5million scheme to install 53 new cameras in the county has already managed to secure the necessary funding for the project to go ahead, but a report to the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s (OPCC) executive board recommended expanding the system to 83.
The new system was partly-funded by a grant of almost £540,000. The rest of the cost is to be split between the OPCC and the six district councils in Cumbria.
The development will also include funding for an extra full time CCTV operator, increasing the constabulary’s total number to three.
Police and Crime Commissioner Richard Rhodes said: “This is something that people like, but expanding it to other towns in the community is something that is being looked at.
“Much will depend on it being subjected to funding sustainability.”
