CCTV “spy car” to target motorists parking illegally near schools

A new high-end CCTV surveillance “spy car” will be used in order to deter motorists from parking illegally around schools in Stoke-on-Trent.

The £74,000 vehicle was bought by the local council a few months ago after receiving close to 633 complaints about parking problems outside schools in two years, a news report in the local media was able to reveal.

The car targets motorists parking over keep clear areas, zig-zag markings and pedestrian crossings specifically, and its area of activity has recently been expanded to include several other illegal parking hotspots.

Council officer Ian Tamburello said: “It would be great if everyone parked and drove sensibly. People parking near schools should follow the rules of the road or risk a penalty or causing an accident.”
