Anglesey CCTV system could be saved following review by local authorities

The decision to switch off the CCTV system across Anglesey could be overturned, at least locally, following an in-depth review of the costs associated to its operation carried out by two of Anglesey’s largest towns.

Councillors in Holyhead Town Council have decided to look at ways in which grant funding could keep the town’s cameras running despite others across the island being switched off, a recent news report in the local media has revealed.

The council members decided to review just how they could use part of the £7.5m cash windfall from the designated Vibrant and Viable Places (VVP) funding in order to keep the cameras rolling.

Llangefni Town Council members have similar ideas, as they have agreed to look at ways to save its CCTV cameras.

In a statement released earlier this year, Anglesey Council Leader Ieuan Williams said the authority had “little choice” but to withdraw services due to funding cuts. “We understand that this is a contentious decision, but our first duty as an Authority must be to protect statutory services – like social services – which we must provide by law,” he added.

“CCTV is not a statutory service and as such we’ve taken the very difficult decision of ending this provision.”

“Of course, we don’t want to withdraw any services but as the severe funding cuts affecting local authorities continue to bite, it’s reached the point where we have little choice.”
