  1. New automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to be deployed Rushcliffe

Comments Off on New automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to be deployed Rushcliffe

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras aimed at recognizing vehicles linked with criminal activity are set to be installed across Rushcliffe, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

Nottinghamshire Police force has spent more than £500,000 installing automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras across the county as part of its proactive approach to catching criminals.

The cameras scan the number plates of passing vehicles and checking it against a database which has listed on it vehicles of interest.

Police officers can then intercept and stop a vehicle, check it for evidence and, where necessary, make arrests.

Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping commented:

“ANPR cameras help the police to catch a lot of criminals, which is why I was pleased to agree the additional funding for these new cameras.

“The message to offenders is simple – ‘don’t risk it’! These new cameras have been strategically placed to capture information on vehicles travelling on key routes in Rushcliffe and together with other initiatives; we are targeting those committing crimes such as burglary and vehicle crime which is what residents have said they want to see.”

  2. New CCTV surveillance camera system to be deployed at Derbyshire park

Comments Off on New CCTV surveillance camera system to be deployed at Derbyshire park

A new CCTV surveillance camera system is set to be deployed at a Derbyshire car park in order to prevent drug dealing on site, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

The single camera will be put in place on a tall stalk in Spider Park, on the Hurst Farm estate in Matlock, in an effort to stop further crimes taking place. The site sits next to Castle View Primary School and Nursery and the Matlock Sure Start Children’s Centre.

Marie Schmidt, the council’s estate regeneration manager, wrote: “Local drug dealers are known to use the park to deal drugs.

“Teenagers and adults meet at the park at night and there are also reports of older children bullying younger children.

“This anti-social behaviour and criminal use is causing local residents to be fearful of using the park and it is stopping parents from allowing the children from using the park to play.

“We believe the CCTV camera will act as a deterrent to the anti-social behaviour and would provide evidence if an incident took place.

“There is strong support for this proposal from the local community group on the estate called Friends of Hurst Farm.

“The aim is to create a community park that is a safe space that can be enjoyed safely by all, especially the children.”

  3. New Facial Recognition Technology from Herta Enables Subject Identification Even While Wearing a Mask

Comments Off on New Facial Recognition Technology from Herta Enables Subject Identification Even While Wearing a Mask

CCTV Surveillance partners and leaders in facial recognition solutions for crowded environments, Herta, have recently launched a new version of its facial recognition algorithms that can correctly identify people who wear facial masks.

The company had been working on the issue of partial occlusions for some time and, following the worldwide outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19), development has been accelerated to launch a version of the software that helps provide an accurate identification under these conditions.

Based on Deep Learning technology, Herta’s algorithms provide very high identification rates, especially in identity verification tasks and their reliability is very high, even when people hide a large part of their face. It is worth noting that the most differential part of the human face is in the eye region.

The launch of this software is key for automatic passenger identification systems, such as border control with the passport. This way it will not be necessary for the person to remove the mask, avoiding possible contagion or long waiting times. Its application, in general, extends to any type of access control or identity verification system.

Herta expects that the impact of this new technology in the market will be very important worldwide and that it will be massively used in environments such as transportation, health, government, events, sports stadiums or in the gaming sector.

  7. Number plate recognition cameras to help prevent parking ‘abuse’ at Lancaster hospital

Comments Off on Number plate recognition cameras to help prevent parking ‘abuse’ at Lancaster hospital

New number plate recognition cameras are set to be deployed at hospitals across Lancaster and the South Lakes as part of a crackdown on those abusing the current parking system, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

The Trust Board of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, which operates Royal Lancaster Infirmary, is bringing ANPR to the city hospital due to its ongoing issues with visitors “abusing” the current pay and display ticket system.

Foluke Ajayi, Chief Operating Officer at the trust, explained: “While the introduction of ANPR will not create any additional spaces, it will help deter people from abusing the current situation by paying for a pay and display ticket and then leaving their car for a long period of time, or not paying at all to park on Trust premises.”

It comes after ANPR systems were introduced to Royal Preston and Chorley hospitals in 2019, with operator ParkingEye receiving a number of complaints about how the system has operated. Chorley MP Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the now Speaker of the House of Commons, also publicly voiced his concern over the system.

Mr Ajayi admitted that the move to bring the system to Lancaster, as well as Furness General Hospital and Westmorland General Hospital, “may be controversial” due to issues that have occurred at other locations, but added that the trust is introducing a number of policies to reduce those with a bad experience of using ANPR car parks.

The CCTV surveillance systems in Grantham and across the district have recorded 2,421 incidents that were reported to police since April 1 last year, leading to 548 arrests, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

The figures were revealed as the CCTV system across the district, which is based in Grantham, was given an official accreditation.

South Kesteven District Council’s CCTV team has received a one-year Certificate of Compliance after its CCTV monitoring operation was found to comply with the national code of practice.

An independent assessor carried out a review before assuring the surveillance camera commissioner, Tony Porter, that SKDC’s operation of the system fully complies with his requirements.

Cabinet member for commercial and operations Councillor Peter Moseley said: “The cameras give residents peace of mind and help our partners in law enforcement to increase public safety and reduce crime across the wider area.

“We welcome the independent scrutiny of our CCTV operations and I am delighted we have received this recognition. It is a tribute to the hard work of our CCTV team who play a significant role in crime prevention.”

The certificate provides reassurance to the public that the cameras are effectively managed and that information gathered is used appropriately. The code of practice aims to balance the need for cameras in public places with individuals’ rights to privacy.

  9. The Met officially deploys Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology

Comments Off on The Met officially deploys Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology

The Metropolitan Police Service has recently announced that it will officially begin the operational use of Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology across specific locations in London.

According to the Met statement, the use of live facial recognition technology will be intelligence-led and will help tackle serious crime, including serious violence, gun and knife crime, child sexual exploitation and help protect the vulnerable.

Assistant Commissioner Nick Ephgrave, said: “This is an important development for the Met and one which is vital in assisting us in bearing down on violence. As a modern police force, I believe that we have a duty to use new technologies to keep people safe in London. Independent research has shown that the public support us in this regard. Prior to deployment we will be engaging with our partners and communities at a local level.

“We are using a tried-and-tested technology, and have taken a considered and transparent approach in order to arrive at this point. Similar technology is already widely used across the UK, in the private sector. Ours has been trialled by our technology teams for use in an operational policing environment.”

The Met will begin operationally deploying LFR at locations where intelligence suggests we are most likely to locate serious offenders. Each deployment will have a bespoke ‘watch list’, made up of images of wanted individuals, predominantly those wanted for serious and violent offences.

Comments Off on New facial recognition system do be deployed at US airport

Facial recognition technology is set to be deployed at an US airport as part of a 45-day pilot of biometric screening technologies to help U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirm identities of departing passengers, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

The scanners are being tested at three gates at Philadelphia International Airport, which became part of a pilot program to use facial recognition technology, also known as Biometric Exit Screening, to confirm the identity of international travelers. Biometric screening is designed to verify travelers’ identities by cross-checking facial scans with photos already on file with the federal government.

The 45-day pilot will take place at three international gates to help U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirm identities of departing passengers.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been mandated by federal law to use biometric exit screenings for foreign nationals (excluding Canadian citizens who don’t require a visa to enter the U.S. and diplomatic and government visa holders), according to an airport release.

“We are excited to welcome this new technology to the airport,” said airport CEO Chellie Cameron. “Working with our partners at CBP and our airlines will ensure our continued dedication to safety and security.”
