  1. Crime across England and Wales falls by 7% to record low

Comments Off on Crime across England and Wales falls by 7% to record low

The most recent data from the Office for National Statistics has revealed that the level of crime has dropped by 7% in the year leading to June, with only 8.5 million incidents being recorded, compared to 9.1 million in the previous year.

Additionally, as a media news report revealed, data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales also suggested that crime levels were actually half the peak level recorded in 1995 and the lowest since the survey began in 1981.

Nevertheless, it’s not all good news, and that’s because cases of fraud rose by 21 per cent, sexual offences by 9 per cent and theft was up by 8 per cent, which is believed to be driven by the theft of smartphones and pick-pocketing.

In the year ending June 2013, a total of 230,355 fraud offences were reported. This represented an increase of 21 per cent compared to the previous year and up 59 per cent compared with 2007/08.

Crime Prevention Minister Norman Baker said: “England and Wales are safer than they have been for decades but we will continue to deliver measures which keep pace with the changing nature of crime and improve our ability to combat emerging issues.”

Quite obviously, CCTV played a pivotal role in solving quite a large number of the reported cases, and this is specifically where CCTV Surveillance could put its extensive experience to very good use.

  2. Flood of HD cameras will lead to a surge in the daily data dump, report suggests

Comments Off on Flood of HD cameras will lead to a surge in the daily data dump, report suggests

The higher number of HD surveillance cameras that will be integrated into surveillance networks in the near future is likely to lead to a doubling in the amount of data being dumped on a daily basis in the next four years, a new research report by the IHS has predicted.

According to an article in the media tackling this topic, the ‘Enterprise and IP Storage used for Video Surveillance’ report suggests that daily data dump rates might reach 859 (PB) Petabytes in 2017 and more than double the 2013 figure of 413 PB, that in itself is enough data to fill 92.1 million single-sided single-layer DVDs and equates to four times the amount of photo and video data stored on Facebook as of February 2012.

The new high-definition technologies will have an impact on the volume of data being produced and dumped. However, it’s not all bad news, since it is believed that new compression algorithms like the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard H.265 – claimed to double the data compression ratio compared to H.264 – will reduce the volume of data produced per camera.

Video content analysis is also cited as having the potential to reduce the amount of data per camera. Rather than simply recording continuously, virtual trip-wires and no-entry zones can trigger the camera to record important events at pre-defined times.

In addition, the report claims increasing capacities of hard disk drives means growing quantities of data can be recorded on-site or on network systems to impact on the quantity of data dumped.

Comments Off on Hidden cameras could be used for supervising care homes under proposals by the CQC

Britain’s first Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care, Andrea Sutcliffe, revealed plans for the CQC to monitor the finances of around 60 of the biggest care providers and also implement a series of measures designed specifically to make services safer, such as hidden cameras and “mystery shoppers”.

According to a news report in the local media, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) boss said that CCTV might be used to make services safer: “We would also like to have an open conversation with people about the use of mystery shoppers and hidden cameras, and whether they would contribute to promoting a culture of safety and quality, while respecting people’s rights to privacy and dignity.”

Norman Lamb, Care and Support minister, added: “No one should have to put up with substandard care – there are serious flaws in the system when people are worrying about the quality of care their loved ones are receiving. Confidence in the regulation regime has been shaken, but we have turned a corner.”

  4. Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) installs CCTV system to monitor contractors’ work

Comments Off on Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) installs CCTV system to monitor contractors’ work

Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) has installed multiple CCTV cameras in order to check the activity of contractors working in Old Town High Street, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, following multiple reports from businesses owners that they had “no sense of urgency”.

Work to install the one-way system, run by Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) for Dacorum Borough Council, started in June and was due to finish at the end of October. However, the disruption created by the ongoing works is expected to overrun by up to five weeks.

Businesses are demanding compensation for a drop in trade and said the overrun could force many of them out of business. Multiple shop owners claim that the project was poorly managed, and that many of the contractors spent most of their days just laying around, doing nothing.

A spokesman for the contractors said “unforeseen circumstances” meant it had to “alter its approach” to the work, which had an effect on time and cost.

Given this situation, council leaders decided to install CCTV cameras in a bid to “make sure the amount of work that is supposed to be carried out is being completed”. They also said that this was “not a covert operation” as all the workers were aware of the cameras, they were not manned on a live basis and it just meant the council could see if a complaint was valid.

Comments Off on Home CCTV system owner in Hull to shame dog owners who fail to clean up their pets’ mess

A Hull resident who’s installed a CCTV system at his property says he wants to shame dog owners who fail to clean up their pets’ mess, a news article in the local media reveals.

Distraught Mr. William Rhodes, of Southcoates Lane, east Hull, says he has been forced to take the drastic step after clearing up mess twice a day. Now, after spending £400 on the surveillance equipment, the home owner warns that anyone caught failing to clean up after their pet risks being reported to Hull City Council.

Mr Rhodes also revealed that he plans to chop down his privet hedge in order to remove a CCTV “black spot”. He said: “I should not have to install CCTV and remove a hedge to catch people who fail to clean up after dogs. But as the council has not done anything about it, I have to do it.”

“If I catch anyone on CCTV, I will be taking the evidence to the council and asking for them to be fined” he summed up.

  8. Local councils to be banned from using spy-cam CCTV cars

Comments Off on Local councils to be banned from using spy-cam CCTV cars

Following numerous complains from drivers all across the UK, government ministers have revealed plans to reconsider parking rules and outlaw “unfair” parking penalties used by many local authorities in order to bolster their finances.

According to a news report on this matter, Conservative party ministers plan to shake-up the parking rules in order to help local, high-street shops, which are often directly affected by the councils’ “unacceptable and aggressive” fine collection practices.

As a part of the new parking enforcement guidelines, transport authorities will be expected to scrap yellow lines deemed “unnecessary” or unpopular with local residents, while also giving up on other measures, such as cars equipped with spy-cams.

Longer periods for payments for parking fines will also be considered.

  9. CCTV helps police and other support services respond to over 5,000 incidents in the St Albans District in 2012, says report

Comments Off on CCTV helps police and other support services respond to over 5,000 incidents in the St Albans District in 2012, says report

A total of 5,131 incidents were dealt with as a result of the CCTV cameras in 2012, made up of 4,460 in St Albans and 671 in Harpenden, which equates to an average of 14 incidents per day across St Albans District, the “Community CCTV Annual Report” for 2012 published by the St Albans City and District Council has revealed.

The Council has 99 public space CCTV systems deployed across the district and there are also two systems, each featuring four cameras, which can be easily re-deployed at identified crime and anti-social behaviour hotspots, depending on specific requirements by the relevant forces.

The report claimed the police were the highest source for incidents but pro-active patrolling by CCTV operators also generated a large number of incidents. Across St Albans District suspicious behaviour was the type of incident recorded most frequently, followed by shoplifting.

Mark Loveday, neighbourhood inspector from Hertfordshire Constabulary, said: “We work closely with the Council and CCTV operators to detect and prevent a wide range of crimes and anti-social behaviour. CCTV also acts as a deterrent to reduce crime and help improve the safety of residents, workers and visitors to St Albans District.”

As part of the report, the St Albans City and District Council also revealed plans plans to upgrade the CCTV control room, providing funds were available. The upgrade would see outdated monitors replaced with flat screens utilising multi-media capability to provide better image quality and flexibility for CCTV operators.

  10. Taxi firm installs in-car CCTV system to protect itself against compensation claims

Comments Off on Taxi firm installs in-car CCTV system to protect itself against compensation claims

A taxi company has decided to take some serious action in order to mitigate any possible compensation claims by installing CCTV cameras in all of its vehicles.

According to a news report on the matter, C&D Taxis, which operates across Tyne and Wear, decided to have latest-generation cameras installed in all of its cars. The cameras record both inside and outside the vehicle, thus helping taxi drivers protect themselves against staged accidents and false whiplash claims, driving offences and traffic allegations.

Setting up such a system is also quite important due to the fact that some insurance companies are offering discounts on premiums to taxis with CCTV set-up.

Chris Waterstreet, owner of C&D Taxis, said that the system will protect himself and his passengers. “CCTV will provide me with evidence of what happens in my taxis. After the initial installation costs, I will re-coup the cost in just one or two years. I won ’t get bogged down with lengthy and expensive investigations when someone makes a claim and hopefully my insurance premium will stop rising each year” he said.

“At the moment when someone makes a claim, we have no evidence to find out the truth and my insurance company always has to pay out. One insurance company is knocking £500 off taxi insurance premiums if you have CCTV installed. My colleagues and customers will feel safer when I have these cameras in. For me, I will be saving money and hassle every day. I would certainly recommend it to other taxi drivers out there” Mr. Waterstreet added.
