  1. Up to 26 million images are captured by CCTV on Britain’s roads daily

Comments Off on Up to 26 million images are captured by CCTV on Britain’s roads daily

A network comprising close to 8,000 active CCTV cameras watches over Britain’s road network, capturing close to 26 million images every day and supplying them to the police and intelligence agencies, a news report in the mainstream media can now reveal.

Also, given the size of this network, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that a national database that stores pictures taken by the automated numberplate recognition (ANPR) cameras currently has 17 billion images in its archive – thought to be the biggest of its kind anywhere in the world.

Furthermore, it’s quite likely that this number would only increase over the next five years with advances in technology and the roll-out of more fixed and portable cameras. In fact, police forces believe it should be possible to read and store between 50 million and 75 million “reads” a day by 2018.

  3. Kingston box junctions monitored by CCTV add 100,000 in fines in December

Comments Off on Kingston box junctions monitored by CCTV add 100,000 in fines in December

Kingston Council has managed to seriously bolster its coffers by installing CCTV monitoring systems in two busy box junctions and issuing fines to motorists, a news report in the local media suggests.

The two junctions netted Kingston Council a total of £254,037.50 in October and November after it started enforcing them with CCTV, while also adding another £100,000 in fines in December.

Each driver who fails to stop at the junction receives an £135 fine, halved if paid within two weeks. Nevertheless, in spite of the fact that these box junctions are designed to prevent gridlock in the town centre, quite a few motorists argue that they are being caught out unfairly or blocked in by other drivers.

  4. Newly installed CCTV cameras help curb anti-social behaviour in Doncaster town centre

Comments Off on Newly installed CCTV cameras help curb anti-social behaviour in Doncaster town centre

Following a spat of anti-social behaviour around the St James flats in the Balby Bridge area of Doncaster, local authorities decided to have CCTV systems installed in the area and they’re already seeing a sizeable reduction in crime levels.

According to a news report in the local media on this topic, previous problems included large groups congregating in stairwells, people urinating and defecating in communal places, open drug usage and extensive littering and fly tipping.

The cameras have now been installed in all of the stairwells and communal areas at the flats, funded by St Leger Homes, the arms length management company who look after Council housing in Doncaster.

“The problems at the estate were occurring on a nightly basis before these cameras were fitted,” said Bill Hotchkiss, Head of Community Safety for Doncaster Council.

“We are now in the positive position where we have seen a dramatic reduction in incidents and more importantly there has been no dispersal to other parts of the estate.”

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones said: “It is essential that we safeguard the wellbeing of the residents of these flats and ensure that everyone has the peaceful lives they are entitled to. We have taken the step to increase the amount of CCTV at the site, and this has had an immediate and positive effect on behaviours at the estate, saving valuable resources in dealing with these issues. We will continue our zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour by taking measures such as these.”

  5. CCTV cameras installed in Canvey to curb drag racing

Comments Off on CCTV cameras installed in Canvey to curb drag racing

Essex County Council decided to install a couple of CCTV cameras in Roscommon Way, Canvey, in a bid to prevent high-speed drag races which typically occurred after dark, a news report in the local media has revealed.

After a serious investigation into the resident’s claims related to anti-social behaviour caused by vehicles in this area, a permanent solution was needed to make the road less attractive to “racing enthusiasts”.

After some serious consideration on the matter, installing the cameras was considered to be the most affordable solution. Putting up the cameras is likely to cost around £5,000 and will be match funded by Essex County Council and Castle Point Borough Council.

Councillor Ray Howard, ward councillor for Canvey Island West, has been working with the residents of Haven Road, said: “I am really pleased.

“These cameras will help to deter those that are using Roscommon Way as a racetrack, this is not only worrying for those that live nearby but it also highly dangerous and against the law.

“The installation of these cameras is also a great example of partnership working amongst the twoCouncils, the Local Highways Panel and Essex Police to support those in the community.”

  6. CCTV systems in Fakenham, Sheringham and North Walsham might get a new lease on life

Comments Off on CCTV systems in Fakenham, Sheringham and North Walsham might get a new lease on life

Very ambitious plans to save the CCTV systems in Fakenham, Sheringham and North Walsham have been forwarded by their respective councils, although residents may have to incur a council tax if these plans go through, a news report in the local media has revealed.

Back in 2013, North Norfolk District Council’s cabinet has voted to scrap all its CCTV cameras in order to be able to save £200,000 per year, with the switch-off date being set for March.

However, in bid to keep their system running, the three town councils have now written to NNDC asking for its CCTV hardware to be handed to a private contractor, with the local authorities being ready to assume responsibility for maintenance and operation costs.

Nevertheless, they did ask the district council to put up £90,000 to cover costs of reconfiguring the CCTV system, which would be £5,000 less than the costs associated to the system’s decommissioning process.

Furthermore, should the overall maintenance costs exceed the town councils’ budgets, residents may be asked if they are prepared to pay an increase in council tax to keep security cameras.

Motorists driving along the M6 will be able to enjoy a superior level of safety by having access to better information, as part of a project set to be implemented by the Highways Agency as of next week.

As part of this project, four of the latest electronic variable message signs are to be installed around junction 33 at Galgate and new CCTV cameras will be installed on these signs, allowing the Highways Agency traffic officers to monitor and manage motorway incidents in a much more timely and effective manner.

The new signs and cameras will be placed a mile and half a mile in each direction from junction 33, with a fifth camera, erected on a standalone mast, erected at the junction itself. The installation work will begin on Monday and should be completed by March 14, a news report in the local media has revealed.

  8. Local authorities in Essex using CCTV to tackle drink driving

Comments Off on Local authorities in Essex using CCTV to tackle drink driving

CCTV operators in Essex will keep an eye out on local pubs in order to prevent drink driving over the festive season, a brand new media report has revealed.

Beside focusing more on public houses, police forces will also make full use of automatic number plate recognition cameras to pick out vehicles belonging to previous offenders, so they can be stopped and checked, while in the same time asking bar staff and the public to report anyone they think is drink-driving.

The campaign by Essex police is already quite successful. Last year, 3,263 people were breathalysed in Essex in December and 126 were found to be over the limit. This year, the first ten days of December saw 1,271 people stopped and tested and 35 found to be over the limit.

Adam Pipe, Essex Police’s casualty reduction manager, said: “Drink-driving is taking a risk, not only with your own life, but those of your passengers and other innocent people on the road.

“It can result in a criminal record, the loss your driving licence, or a fine of as much as £5,000. If you kill or injure someone you could face as long as 14 years in prison.

  9. London Assembly member makes public call for private CCTV cameras to be registered with police

Comments Off on London Assembly member makes public call for private CCTV cameras to be registered with police

A Conservative London Assembly Member has issued a public call for private CCTV cameras to be voluntarily registered with police in order to aid police when investigating crimes, a media news report has revealed.

Referring to a report on CCTV numbers by the British Security Industry Association, published earlier this year, which found that privately-owned cameras outnumber public CCTV by a ratio of 70-to-one, Mr. Roger Evans believes that, by voluntarily registering the cameras to a database, private home owners would help police find relevant cameras quickly when conducting an investigation.

He said: “With limited resources the police should be working more closely with private CCTV owners across the Capital as the costs are minimal for the potential benefits. Pubs, clubs, shops and offices – who already own private CCTV cameras – should be able to register their details on a central website if they would like to help solve crimes in their area.

“Officers could then locate these cameras on a digital map and instantly contact the owners for footage in the event of a crime. Similar schemes are successfully running in places like New Orleans and Philadelphia. In many cases the footage is out there to solve a crime and we should have systems for the police and London’s civic minded people to work together in a simple and cheap way to catch villains.”

  10. Spalding CCTV could be ran from high-end facility in Boston, says report

Comments Off on Spalding CCTV could be ran from high-end facility in Boston, says report

Members of the South Holland District Council are seriously considering a proposal to form a partnership with Boston Borough Council regarding the operation and control of the CCTV camera network in Spalding, a news report in the local media has revealed.

According to this proposal, control of the surveillance network should be passed onto a state-of-the-art facility at Boston Borough Council, that would enable a 24h hour manning service.

CCTV cameras in Spalding are currently operated by a group of dedicated volunteers from a control room at the police station, but due to its specific nature, this has not been a 24/7 service.

Running the new cameras costs £1,135 each – £19,000 for a 24/7 service or £14,000 for 18 hours.
