Comments Off on New CCTV cameras to be deployed across East Grinstead in crime-cutting bid

Multiple new CCTC surveillance cameras could be installed in East Grinstead as part of an ambitious initiative to drive drown the high levels of crime in the area, a news source suggests.

There are currently 12 CCTV cameras in East Grinstead, which are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week by Sussex Police.

If the scheme is given the go-ahead, the new cameras would be installed when MSDC replaces the existing cameras, which need to be upgraded, throughout the district.

Councillor Norman Webster, cabinet member for health and community at MSDC said: “We’ve worked in partnership with Sussex Police to review where crime and antisocial behaviour has taken place in our towns over the past few years.

“We’ve used this information to suggest the most appropriate, necessary and effective locations for CCTV cameras.

“With our current town centre CCTV cameras coming to the end of their working life and in need of replacement, now is the perfect time to review their location and make sure they are being as effective as they can be.”

  2. Bristol to spend £8m on new surveillance monitoring centre

Comments Off on Bristol to spend £8m on new surveillance monitoring centre

Despite having more surveillance cameras than Manchester and Liverpool combined, Bristol is set to invest a further £8.2 into its systems in order to bring them up to date and provide a more comprehensive approach to security, a recent news report has been able to find.

Under the new plans, the city’s three existing 24-hour CCTV surveillance centres brought together under one roof.

The decision has been pitched as forming part of an over-arching citywide plan to reduce the number of buildings the council uses.

The move into one new upgraded central hub, at the council’s offices at 100 Temple Street, would also see core systems replaced safeguarding against systems crashing, which would potentially cost the council as much as £4.7million.

A report explains that if there is extra investment over and above the cost of re-siting the three centres, then the income generated by the move could be as much as £8.4million over a decade.

  3. New CCTV surveillance camera to prevent vandalism in Boston shopping street

Comments Off on New CCTV surveillance camera to prevent vandalism in Boston shopping street

It is hoped that a new CCTV surveillance camera will curb a spate of anti-social behaviour and vandalism that has recently affected a busy shopping street in the centre of Boston, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

Businesses in Emery Lane have had windows repeatedly smashed this year, alongside a number of other incidents where the lane joins West Street.

At a meeting of Boston Town Area Committee (BTAC) last week, Boston’s Borough Council’s community safety manager Peter Hunn outlined the need for a grant to pay for the new camera.

Cameras currently cover half of the lane and the entrance to it from West Street. The central one was previously decommissioned but left up to act as a deterrent. The cost of installing a new camera would be £5,368, Mr Hunn explained, which would help to prevent anti-social behaviour-related crime, which happens mostly at night and at weekends.

Comments Off on New CCTV control room will control 300 surveillance cameras in Plymouth

Plymouth’s 300 security cameras will now be monitored from a brand new control room located in a formerly disused room beneath the Council House, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The new and modern control room will enable users to call up footage from almost 300 cameras located across the city – from the city centre pedestrian areas, district shopping centres, car parks to paths to parks.

As well as monitoring public safety and general surveillance, the system is also linked into retailers who are members of Plymouth Against Retail Crime. The team also monitors the radio channels used by the parking operations team, police radio as well as Nite Net – a radio used by local pubs and clubs.

The new centre will also mean the Council House will have 24-hour security as there will be permanent presence of staff in the building. The intention is for the centre to be accessible to the police, to help better team up the other organisations who help keep the city safe.

Comments Off on New 12m CCTV pole put up in Oakham playing field

A local council has installed a 12m CCTV pole on a local playing field in a bid to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the area, a news report has revealed.

Rutland County Council has put up the pole in Royce Recreation Ground last month as part of an ongoing programme to improve CCTV coverage across the county. The cameras record high-res images, even in low light, and link into Leicestershire Police’s control room.

Council leader Roger Begy said: “The addition and size of the new column on Princess Avenue is needed enable images to be sent back to the recording hub at the fire station. This will enable the police to react to calls to the 999 centre at Enderby – allowing them to instantly assess a situation and allocate resources if necessary.

  6. New £2.5 million CCTV system in Cumbria helps tackle crime

Comments Off on New £2.5 million CCTV system in Cumbria helps tackle crime

The new 53-camera CCTV system installed in Cumbria is already helping police officers investigate various incidents in the initial days since its official launch, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The £2.5 million cutting-edge network, placed on high streets and residential roads, covers key locations across places including Carlisle, Penrith, Workington and Whitehaven, and went live 11 days ago after nearly two years of planning.

The cameras will be producing high quality images that are expected to provide better evidence in court, prompting criminals to confess and save victims from having to testify.

Police say staff will monitor it round-the-clock at peak times for trouble, such as weekends, with other trained workers on hand to step in at all other times. All images will be recorded and kept for 30 days, unless stored longer as evidence.

The county’s chief constable, Jerry Graham, has said the cameras will help direct resources to where they would be most effective. The system is being run from the Cumbria Police communications centre at the force’s Carleton Hall headquarters, near Penrith.

  7. Petition asks for the installation of CCTV at Marine Gardens in Carrickfergus

Comments Off on Petition asks for the installation of CCTV at Marine Gardens in Carrickfergus

Residents in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, have signed a petition to have a CCTV system installed at Marine Gardens, a local pirate-themed park, following an arson attack in the play area, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The was widespread condemnation among the local community over the incident, which saw youths set fire to a trampoline. Vandalism and anti-social behaviour have been recurring problems at the outdoor venue, which re-opened in 2012 following a £1.3 million regeneration scheme.

In 2013, several wooden panels were broken and graffiti daubed on the replica galleon ship at the centre of the children’s play zone. Some £10,000 worth of damage was caused the following year after vandals smashed decorative lighting at the war memorial.

In response to the latest incident, an online petition set up by members of Progressive Unionist Party in Carrickfergus is calling for the installation of CCTV at the location in order to deter criminals.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Mid and East Antrim Borough Council said: “[We] work in close co-operation with the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour such as the arson attack at the Marine Gardens in Carrickfergus last weekend.

“The installation and running of a CCTV system for any part of the borough would have significant resource implications which would have to be approved by council on foot of a comprehensive business case being produced by officials.”

  8. Stornoway taxis to install CCTV cameras

Comments Off on Stornoway taxis to install CCTV cameras

Some 40 black cabs in Stornoway will be equipped with CCTV cameras for the first time to protect drivers – but they won’t be able to view the footage, a news report in the local newspaper has revealed.

City Cabs has announced it is giving its taxi drivers the option to have their vehicle fitted with a safety camera, after the scheme was approved by the city council. The company believes that cab cameras will make drivers feel safe at work and will “defuse” any situation that may arise in the vehicle between a driver and a passenger. However the footage can only be viewed by the council or police.

The new cameras will also be fitted with a part-time audio function, that will act as a “panic button” for drivers. This will give drivers the ability to record what is being said in their taxi for four minutes – in the event they were being
verbally abused.

Gavin Barrie, convenor of the regulatory and licensing sub-committee said: “We think it is a positive move and we encourage taxi drivers to take up the opportunity. It will remain voluntary.”

A Hull street affected by serious anti-social behaviour has been denied the installation of a CCTV system to the costs involved, a news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

People living in Linnaeus Street and Walker Street say there are frequent burglaries, drug use and problems with speeding vehicles, including near Adelaide Primary School.

Comments Off on Police detainee transport vans to be fitted with CCTV

The police vans that transport detainees to cells in London will be fitted with CCTV on the future, as a result of a campaign by families bereaved by deaths in custody, a recent news report has been able to reveal.

Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, the Metropolitan police commissioner, said every borough will have at least one van with five video cameras, three microphones and two monitors, in an attempt to increase transparency in his force.

The commissioner said the decision was influenced by concerns raised by a number of bereaved families, including relatives of Sean Rigg, who died in 2008 of a heart attack at Brixton police station, London.

The decision to roll out the cameras follows two trials in 2012 in Lambeth and Haringey, and 121 of 129 vans have already been fitted, with the remainder of the fleet due to follow suit in the coming months.

All future vans commissioned by the Met to transport detainees to custody will have the CCTV system fitted as standard. The system turns on when the car is started and continues for 30 minutes after the engine is switched off.
