  1. CCTV system bolsters security in Gloucester city centre

Comments Off on CCTV system bolsters security in Gloucester city centre

The new CCTV system deployed in Gloucester City centre has already managed to improve security in the area by leading to several successful prosecutions of people carrying out criminal acts in the area, a recent news report has found.

Working in partnership with BT, the local authority deployed the new CCTV cameras in September 2015, as part of an upgrade project with the installation of free Wi-Fi and improved 4G connectivity in the city centre.

The upgrades saw 50 new high-definition CCTV cameras installed in the heart of the city centre and Gloucester Park, along with a new camera control room.

One of the major benefits of the new camera system is the improvement to image quality, as well as 360 degree movement capabilities, which allows camera operators to follow suspects as they move through the streets.

PC Mark Mansfield, licensing officer for the city, said; “It’s stunning. This CCTV is crystal clear, not like the pixelated images of old.

“The only way I can described it is that night time is now like daytime thanks to these facilities. They’re already helping us identify people linked to incidents and I’m sure will help us get results we wouldn’t have otherwise got in the future.”

Comments Off on Police asks for deployment of CCTV system at Glasgow Necropolis

A senior police figure with Police Scotland has called for the deployment of CCTV cameras at the Glasgow Necropolist, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The Glasgow Necropolis is a historic cemetery and tourist attraction, the 37-acre Victorian cemetery, east of the city centre, containing about 3,500 monuments and sculptures. As such, it is in serious danger of being affected by antisocial behaviour.

Glasgow City Council said the implementation of cameras had been explored but the topography of the site made it difficult.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “Community Safety Glasgow currently deploy two daily security patrols, staggered day and night, to the Necropolis and random mobile CCTV patrols are also conducted in the area to deter and detect antisocial behaviour. Foot patrols are also carried out within the Necropolis to deter dog fouling.

“There are also quarterly meetings between Police Scotland, the council, Community Safety Glasgow and the Friends of the Necropolis group to discuss any issues.

“The possibility of using re-deployable CCTV in the Necropolis was also explored, but the topography of the site made it difficult in terms of radio signalling.”

CCTV Surveillance offers a wide range of digital cameras available in various types and sizes (from Digital CCTV Bullet Cameras to Infra-red CCTV Cameras), but also quite an extensive range of DVRs. It’s important to point out that all of the DVRs supplied by CCTV Surveillance support long-term, continuous high quality digital CCTV recording, being able to securely store footage for several CCTV cameras found on the network.

The strategic move to reinforce security of ports has come from Gujarat at the most opportune time given the fact that some suspicious boats possibly belonging to terrorist outfits were seen near the coast, early this year.

Other ports such as Bhavnagar, Veraval, Jafrabad, Mandvi and Old Mundra are also expected to get similar CCTV cover integrated with the Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) in the future. 6. BS 7958:2015 standard undergoes revision

Comments Off on BS 7958:2015 standard undergoes revision

BSI, the business standards company, has recently carried out an important revision of BS 7958:2015 Closed circuit television (CCTV) – Management and operation – Code of practice in order to incorporate the changes required following the introduction of the CCTV Code of Practice issued by the Surveillance Camera Commissioner (SCC) as required by the Freedoms of Information Act 2012.

Closed circuit television (CCTV) schemes provide the public with added reassurance that the environment in which they have the ‘right to visit’ is safe and protected. However it is crucial for them to have confidence that surveillance cameras are being used to protect and support them, rather than spy on them. The government considers that wherever overt surveillance in public places is used it shall be in pursuit of a legitimate aim and meets a pressing need.

CCTV schemes that process personal data are obliged to conform to certain legislation such as the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA), the Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA), the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 and the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000. BS 7958 is designed to supplement this legislation and aims to ensure fairness, purpose and responsibility.

The BS 7958 provides a set of a code of practice for public space CCTV systems, taking due regard of the 12 principles of the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice and gives recommendations for the management and operation of CCTV within a controlled environment, where data that might be offered as evidence is received, stored, reviewed or analysed.

The standard also offers advice on best practice to assist owners in obtaining reliable information that can be used as evidence. It applies to the monitoring and management of public spaces, including automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and traffic enforcement cameras and also includes the operation and management of body worn cameras.

Some of the organisations that have been involved in the collaborative consensus-based development process include: British Security Industry Association, Home Office Science, IQ Verify, ITS UK Security and Resilience Interest Group, National Security Inspectorate, SSAIB, Security Industry Authority, Security Monitoring Centres Ltd and Scottish CCTV & Executive.

  7. Security cameras could help tackle the rise in rural crime across Ireland

Comments Off on Security cameras could help tackle the rise in rural crime across Ireland

A number of Irish TDs have argued that deploying CCTV surveillance systems in areas located in the close proximity of motorways could help reduce rural crime, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

This comes as Nenagh in Co Tipperary recently began using a state-of-the-art CCTV system which already helped reduce crime levels in the area.

The security cameras have been installed in cooperation with local businesses and funded by the local authority. District Administrator of Nenagh Municipal District, Rosemary Joyce, said: “The total cost was in the region of €75 thousand and we feel it was very cost-effective.

“The fact that it took a number of years to actually complete worked in our favour because the prices went down and the quality of the equipment went up.”

There are 16 new CCTV cameras dotted around Nenagh and there have already been a number of prosecutions for people for criminal activity.

Comments Off on Residents call for CCTV cameras to be installed around Leicester’s Rushey Fields Park

More than 600 residents have signed a petition calling on Leicester City Council to install surveillance CCTV cameras in Leicester’s Rushey Fields Park following a spate of crimes, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The Rushey Fields Residents Association called a crisis meeting where they put their concerns about violent crime and antisocial behaviour to police, councillors and Leicester West MP Keith Vaz.

Shanjeev Sharma, chairman of the residents association, said: “There is so much crime in the area, we feel the only solution is for the city council to install CCTV cameras. People living in the area have had enough. They should feel safe when using the park or local shops but they are afraid, especially after dark.

“That’s why we need CCTV. It would not only reassure people but would deter criminals, and provide evidence for the police if crime or antisocial behaviour is committed.”

CCTV surveillance will be stepped up at Liverpool’s Birkenhead Park, accompanied by more police patrols, following a spate of vandalism and break-ins, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

The park has been targeted twice in the last week, with break-ins at Birkenhead Park visitor centre and Birkenhead St Mary’s Cricket Club.

Property inside the visitor centre will now be marked with a unique code and a spray will be installed which marks anyone inside the building when the intruder alarm is activated.

There will also be extra CCTV cameras with increased resolution and new external sensors linked to audible warnings and spotlights to illuminate intruders.

Community Patrol Officers have been tasked to focus extra attention to the park and its boundary and police are increasing their patrols, targeting times of day and locations at higher risk of crime.
