  1. Gloucester Cathedral installs CCTV cameras to deter anti-social behaviour

Comments Off on Gloucester Cathedral installs CCTV cameras to deter anti-social behaviour

Gloucester Cathedral has installed 17 CCTV cameras to help decrease anti-social behaviour around the building.

56 incidents of anti-social behaviour were reported at Gloucester Cathedral in the first six months of 2017, including theft, criminal damage and drunken behaviour.

According to police CCTV operators, the cathedral is often used as an escape route for shoplifters thanks to its numerous entrances and exits. The new cameras will be monitored at Gloucestershire Police control room in Quedgeley.

Theo Platt, head of development and communications hoped that the cameras would act mainly as a deterrent.

“We will be installing new signage to make it obvious that there are cameras in operation,” he added. “Lots of different people use this space, we want to make sure people are safe and that it’s an environment people want to spend time in.”

CCTV supervisor Alison Wright said: “We lose an awful lot in the cathedral grounds, with regards to shoplifters who run. There’s an awful lot of exits and entrances into the cathedral grounds, it will be brilliant we can now follow these people. CCTV is now expected and plays a huge part in anything we need evidence for.”

Comments Off on New CCTV monitoring centre set to open in Dundee

A new CCTV monitoring and control centre is set to open in Dundee in early December, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

The £750,000 Safety and Alarm Response Centre (SARC) will be a round-the-clock service to keep city residents safe.

The base will allow Dundee City Council staff to respond to incidents more quickly by bringing footage from CCTV cameras – of which there are about 1,000 in the city – under one roof.

It will also respond to the council’s 6,000 residents who are supported by the community alarm service.

The centre, which will be housed at the West District Housing Office in Sinclair Street in Lochee, will also allow information to be passed between other agencies, including police, ambulance and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

The aim is to get to incidents more quickly, and in particular, alarm systems at sheltered housing complexes will be linked up to the SARC, allowing council officials and blue light services to respond faster.

  3. Facial recognition CCTV cameras to be used for athletes’ identification at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Comments Off on Facial recognition CCTV cameras to be used for athletes’ identification at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Athletes and staff attending the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be identified using facial recognition CCTV cameras and technology, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

The security system being rolled out across the event’s venues will be used to prevent people from stealing access cards and using them to access restricted areas – instead, attendees will need to show that their facial image matches the one shared by the card.

All 300,000 people accredited to attend the event – from athletes and officials through to staff members and media representatives – will have their facial images enrolled in the comparison database.

“This latest technology will enable strict identification of accredited people compared with relying solely on the eyes of security staff,” said Tsuyoshi Iwashita, the Games’ executive director of security.

CCTV Surveillance – The experts in deploying Facial Recognition CCTV systems

The Facial Recognition CCTV solution supplied by CCTV Surveillance dynamically compares images of individuals from incoming video streams against those stored in a predefined access control list and immediately sends alerts when a positive match occurs.

The technology yields a very good level of performance despite partial occlusions of the face, the use of glasses, scarves or caps, changes of facial expression, and moderate rotations of the face. Moreover, it does not allow users to be impersonated using photographs.

This biometric technology is the perfect solution to control the access to restricted security areas, especially since we’re talking about a completely automated system that requires very little interaction with the operator.

Our Facial Recognition CCTV system can be easily integrated with existing ID management products and enables administrators to easily create Whitelists/Blacklists for specific areas, while subjects can be very easily enrolled from one or more photographs.

The system fully supports runtime alarm management, is highly tunable (control based on time-frames, sequentially, etc) and even allows alarms to be exported to common formats (PDF, Excel) and remote devices (mobile, PDA, tablet, security control centre).

  4. CCTV Surveillance System can deliver enhanced site security for SMEs

Comments Off on CCTV Surveillance System can deliver enhanced site security for SMEs

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras are among the best security enforcement solutions for companies of all sizes, including small and medium enterprises, as they act as potential intruder deterrents and are also capable of providing evidence in case of a theft or other criminal activity.

CCTV cameras– also known as video surveillance or security cameras – allows you to record and monitor what’s happening on your premises. Whether you use wall-mounted cameras or standalone devices, security cameras are used to enhance safety, as well as to provide evidence, should a crime be committed on your property.

One of the first things SMEs have to decide upon is the type of cameras they are going to install on their premises. These might include wireless IP cameras – digital and connected to the internet, accessible from anywhere in the world, or wired cameras, which are typically the traditional choice for video surveillance as they do not need to rely on, or run, a computer and internet connection continuously.

Another important element to factor in when designing a CCTV surveillance system for SMEs is the camera(s)’ location – it is important to decide early whether your company will require indoor cameras, outdoor cameras or both.

It’s important to decide how much and how long you can store the recordings and whether your need some extra features, such as night vision or facial recognition. Other factors one should consider are the image resolution required (so whether you need high levels of detail or not), and design – discrete cameras versus high-visibility models designed to maximize the deterrent factor.

Last, but certainly not least, it’s important to consider the pricing for your system, and also the after care options that your installer might deliver.

  6. CCTV Surveillance facial recognition partners Herta outshine competitors at US Homeland Security event

Comments Off on CCTV Surveillance facial recognition partners Herta outshine competitors at US Homeland Security event

CCTV Surveillance’s facial recognition partners, Herta, have managed to outshine competitors at the 2018 Biometric Technology Rally organized by the US Department of Homeland Security, in collaboration with NIST, the company has revealed.

The 2018 Biometric Technology Rally took place in March 2018, at the Maryland Test Facility (MdTF), a DHS affiliated laboratory. Herta came out on the top 3 facial recognition vendors, among the highest scores for efficiency, customer satisfaction and performance.

The rally participants were provided with a gallery of 3,000 images of around 300 people, and each contestant was required to match people’s faces one at a time as they were going through a facial recognition checkpoint. The test measured the average transaction time, failure to process an image, percentage of satisfied customers and the effectiveness of providing a positive identification within a 5 and 20 seconds interval.

Herta designed a specific solution for this one to many (1:n) test despite its speciality is many to many (n:m) as in some of its main projects to improve safety in safe cities or sports stadiums.

The scenario simulated an airport control point where the solution compares traveler’s passport pictures from the images captured through the CCTV cameras. Herta used its real-time face identification technology to meet the Rally requirements, and it exceeded the average for most of the metrics as well as the 95% successful face identification rate in less than 5 seconds, compared to an average of 65%.

Alex Collado-Castells, CTO at Herta and responsible for the rally deployment, explained that the test was very successful and it helped to prove how the company’s technology stands out among other competitors, and to see what governments are looking for when it comes to a checkpoint solution.

“It was an inspiring experience, where we had to work under pressure in order to design a specific solution for a test which reflects a real world use case.” Collado-Castells said. “The test generated very useful metrics which are aligned to the current government requirements and needs. Herta performed excellent at efficiency, customer satisfaction and performance, the three main goals of the Rally.”

  9. CCTV surveillance systems to be affected by GDPR

Comments Off on CCTV surveillance systems to be affected by GDPR

CCTV surveillance systems will also be affected by the GDPR regulations, as the manner in which footage is captured, handled and stored will also come under the effect of the new set of rules, experts in the field  believe.

Under the new rules, building owners require a valid reason for its placement – security, health and safety, or to capture footage of any incidents that occur within the company premises.

Furthermore, camera placement should also be very seriously considered, with the emphasis being, once more, on relevant reasons.

Employees are entitled to their privacy, and can object to CCTV being fitting in certain areas throughout the business – places such as canteens, break areas fitted with access control systems or even public spaces. However, if you are able to highlight a security risk that could be minimised through using CCTV, it is more likely that the CCTV will be accepted in these places.

If you’re currently using CCTV or thinking about using it in the future, once you have recorded any footage, you should be aware that you are collecting individual data. It is important then to inform people who operate in and around your business, and you should have a disclosure to tell them that CCTV is in use and that they could be captured on any footage that is obtained. A common method of resolution is to have signs that are clear and that also feature a number for those who want to contact the CCTV operators if they have any queries.

Captured footage from CCTV cameras is allowed to be kept for 30 days in total and should not be held any longer. If you need to keep it for longer, you will need to carry out a risk assessment that explains the reasons why. Images and videos that you acquire through your CCTV system might be requested by the police, but make sure that they have a written request. Police will usually view the CCTV footage on your premises and this would not warrant any concerns for the leak of the data.

  10. Campaign launched to fit CCTV surveillance cameras in Every Care Home

Comments Off on Campaign launched to fit CCTV surveillance cameras in Every Care Home

A new campaign to install CCTV surveillance cameras in all care homes that was recently launched by charity organization Care Campaign For The Vulnerable has received widespread support, with former Attorney General Dominic Grieve expressing his full support for the initiative and vowing to take to the highest level of government, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

There is currently no mandatory requirement for providers to use safety monitoring in public areas which critics say leaves vulnerable residents at greater risk of abuse.

This is the reason why Care Campaign For The Vulnerable has launched this campaign, centred around the argument that requiring the public parts of care homes to be monitored by CCTV would contribute to reducing the possibility of abuse.

Overt CCTV in areas like lounges, dining areas, entrances and exits, would require no permission from residents and staff and could be achieved quickly. The vast majority of preventable neglect like rough handling, falls in corridors, and elderly residents, many of who have dementia but are left unattended, takes place in public areas.

Jayne Connery, who founded the pressure group, said: “This simple step will help safeguard those who are no longer able to safeguard themselves.

Numerous cases of horrendous abuse could have been prevented if only cameras had been fitted to cover public areas. What I hear from families every day is a national tragedy. Care homes are failing and these people need protecting.

With public trust and confidence so low surely it is time technology was implemented that permitted greater transparency, delivered more certainty and significantly improved trust.

We want the Government to listen to our concerns and act.”
