  1. CCTV Surveillance facial recognition partners Herta outshine competitors at US Homeland Security event

Comments Off on CCTV Surveillance facial recognition partners Herta outshine competitors at US Homeland Security event

CCTV Surveillance’s facial recognition partners, Herta, have managed to outshine competitors at the 2018 Biometric Technology Rally organized by the US Department of Homeland Security, in collaboration with NIST, the company has revealed.

The 2018 Biometric Technology Rally took place in March 2018, at the Maryland Test Facility (MdTF), a DHS affiliated laboratory. Herta came out on the top 3 facial recognition vendors, among the highest scores for efficiency, customer satisfaction and performance.

The rally participants were provided with a gallery of 3,000 images of around 300 people, and each contestant was required to match people’s faces one at a time as they were going through a facial recognition checkpoint. The test measured the average transaction time, failure to process an image, percentage of satisfied customers and the effectiveness of providing a positive identification within a 5 and 20 seconds interval.

Herta designed a specific solution for this one to many (1:n) test despite its speciality is many to many (n:m) as in some of its main projects to improve safety in safe cities or sports stadiums.

The scenario simulated an airport control point where the solution compares traveler’s passport pictures from the images captured through the CCTV cameras. Herta used its real-time face identification technology to meet the Rally requirements, and it exceeded the average for most of the metrics as well as the 95% successful face identification rate in less than 5 seconds, compared to an average of 65%.

Alex Collado-Castells, CTO at Herta and responsible for the rally deployment, explained that the test was very successful and it helped to prove how the company’s technology stands out among other competitors, and to see what governments are looking for when it comes to a checkpoint solution.

“It was an inspiring experience, where we had to work under pressure in order to design a specific solution for a test which reflects a real world use case.” Collado-Castells said. “The test generated very useful metrics which are aligned to the current government requirements and needs. Herta performed excellent at efficiency, customer satisfaction and performance, the three main goals of the Rally.”

CCTV Surveillance – The experts in deploying Facial Recognition CCTV systems

The Facial Recognition CCTV solution supplied by CCTV Surveillance dynamically compares images of individuals from incoming video streams against those stored in a predefined access control list and immediately sends alerts when a positive match occurs.

The technology yields a very good level of performance despite partial occlusions of the face, the use of glasses, scarves or caps, changes of facial expression, and moderate rotations of the face. Moreover, it does not allow users to be impersonated using photographs.

This biometric technology is the perfect solution to control the access to restricted security areas, especially since we’re talking about a completely automated system that requires very little interaction with the operator.

Our Facial Recognition CCTV system can be easily integrated with existing ID management products and enables administrators to easily create Whitelists/Blacklists for specific areas, while subjects can be very easily enrolled from one or more photographs.

The system fully supports runtime alarm management, is highly tunable (control based on time-frames, sequentially, etc) and even allows alarms to be exported to common formats (PDF, Excel) and remote devices (mobile, PDA, tablet, security control centre).

Comments Off on 116 new CCTV cameras to be deployed across 17 towns throughout Dyfed-Powys

Dyfed-Powys Police has announced plans to deploy 116 state of the art CCTV cameras to towns identified as priority camera locations through crime analysis and stakeholder consultation, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

The programme of works will be carried out over the coming months and is due for completion in Spring 2019.

Camera locations have been selected through careful mapping of hotspot crime and anti-social behaviour areas to fully maximise the benefits from each camera site.

Dafydd Llywelyn, Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “CCTV was a key election pledge of mine, and I promised I would invest in a modern CCTV infrastructure. I am very pleased to be able to say that this is now happening.

“It is vitally important that the force makes the best use of this significant reinvestment to target hotspots and drive reductions linked to disorder and violence.

“This rollout will not be the end of the force’s work in this area and future opportunities for camera sites will be considered.”

Comments Off on Facial recognition CCTV system could be deployed in Southend

A facial recognition CCTV system could be deployed in Southend, making it the first area to trial it, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

Members of Southend policing team, BID (Business Improvement District) and the council attended a demo of the technology, insisting, however, that the concept is still in its very early stages.

Chief Insp Pudney said: “It looks really good.

“I was impressed with the demonstration of the system but there’s a number of factors we need to consider and discuss with everyone involved.

“We will be exploring options to be the first to trial this in the UK.

“It is smart new technology designed to prevent and reduce crime and make the best use of our resources.”

Mark Flewitt, Southend’s councillor for public protection, said: “The council and our partners have reviewed the possibility of adding facial recognition to our already high quality CCTV systems.

“This review enabled us to see the pros and cons of the equipment and how it would fit in Southend.

“At this stage, we will continue to review a number of different avenues for protecting the public through CCTV.”

  4. CCTV surveillance systems to be affected by GDPR

Comments Off on CCTV surveillance systems to be affected by GDPR

CCTV surveillance systems will also be affected by the GDPR regulations, as the manner in which footage is captured, handled and stored will also come under the effect of the new set of rules, experts in the field  believe.

Under the new rules, building owners require a valid reason for its placement – security, health and safety, or to capture footage of any incidents that occur within the company premises.

Furthermore, camera placement should also be very seriously considered, with the emphasis being, once more, on relevant reasons.

Employees are entitled to their privacy, and can object to CCTV being fitting in certain areas throughout the business – places such as canteens, break areas fitted with access control systems or even public spaces. However, if you are able to highlight a security risk that could be minimised through using CCTV, it is more likely that the CCTV will be accepted in these places.

If you’re currently using CCTV or thinking about using it in the future, once you have recorded any footage, you should be aware that you are collecting individual data. It is important then to inform people who operate in and around your business, and you should have a disclosure to tell them that CCTV is in use and that they could be captured on any footage that is obtained. A common method of resolution is to have signs that are clear and that also feature a number for those who want to contact the CCTV operators if they have any queries.

Captured footage from CCTV cameras is allowed to be kept for 30 days in total and should not be held any longer. If you need to keep it for longer, you will need to carry out a risk assessment that explains the reasons why. Images and videos that you acquire through your CCTV system might be requested by the police, but make sure that they have a written request. Police will usually view the CCTV footage on your premises and this would not warrant any concerns for the leak of the data.

  5. Campaign launched to fit CCTV surveillance cameras in Every Care Home

Comments Off on Campaign launched to fit CCTV surveillance cameras in Every Care Home

A new campaign to install CCTV surveillance cameras in all care homes that was recently launched by charity organization Care Campaign For The Vulnerable has received widespread support, with former Attorney General Dominic Grieve expressing his full support for the initiative and vowing to take to the highest level of government, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

There is currently no mandatory requirement for providers to use safety monitoring in public areas which critics say leaves vulnerable residents at greater risk of abuse.

This is the reason why Care Campaign For The Vulnerable has launched this campaign, centred around the argument that requiring the public parts of care homes to be monitored by CCTV would contribute to reducing the possibility of abuse.

Overt CCTV in areas like lounges, dining areas, entrances and exits, would require no permission from residents and staff and could be achieved quickly. The vast majority of preventable neglect like rough handling, falls in corridors, and elderly residents, many of who have dementia but are left unattended, takes place in public areas.

Jayne Connery, who founded the pressure group, said: “This simple step will help safeguard those who are no longer able to safeguard themselves.

Numerous cases of horrendous abuse could have been prevented if only cameras had been fitted to cover public areas. What I hear from families every day is a national tragedy. Care homes are failing and these people need protecting.

With public trust and confidence so low surely it is time technology was implemented that permitted greater transparency, delivered more certainty and significantly improved trust.

We want the Government to listen to our concerns and act.”

  6. Facial recognition CCTV cameras might soon replace tickets

Comments Off on Facial recognition CCTV cameras might soon replace tickets

Facial recognition CCTV systems might soon replace traditional ticketing systems for various event venues, as Live Nation, of the industry’s largest players, is actively working on such a system, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

The company behind the Ticketmaster brand, is developing a facial recognition system that, it claims, could in future be used instead of tickets.

According to Live Nation, the new technology can take an image of somebody’s face and compare it to a database of images. Once this has been done, the ticket holder is positively identified and can enter the event.

While facial recognition systems are far from new, they still suffer from a high level of false positives and negatives, on top of the obvious privacy issues.

However, that has not stopped organisations around the world from rolling out such systems.

  7. IP-based CCTV Surveillance Cameras to tackle illegal dumping

Comments Off on IP-based CCTV Surveillance Cameras to tackle illegal dumping

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) in Hong Kong will progressively extend the scheme on installation of Internet Protocol (IP) CCTV surveillance cameras to combat illegal dumping, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

The IP cameras will be deployed at “illegal refuse deposit blackspots” in all districts starting from 6 June to combat illegal deposits of refuse and improve environmental hygiene.

A spokesman for the FEHD said the Department FEHD launched a six-month pilot scheme on installation of IP cameras at six refuse deposit blackspots in Central and Western, Sham Shui Po and Yuen Long districts in late December 2016.

The pilot scheme was said to have effectively curbed illegal dumping through targeted surveillance and enforcement actions.

Considering these encouraging results, the FEHD, after consulting all District Councils, will extend the scheme to cover about 80 refuse deposit blackspots in the territory for a trial period of one year. The scheme will be reviewed one year after implementation.

When the scheme commences next week, IP cameras installed at 46 blackspots in various districts will be ready for use and installation work at the remaining blackspots will be conducted progressively.

CCTV Surveillance – suppliers and installers of a full-range of IP CCTV cameras

IP CCTV video surveillance solutions (also known as networked cameras, IP CCTV cameras, Network Cameras, Internet-enabled security cameras or web cameras) are the future of video monitoring installations, as they deliver superior HD-grade image quality and ease of use at a very affordable price point.

Networked cameras convert video and audio feeds into data, which is then streamed over a network or an Internet connection to just about anywhere around the world. Since they often use existing network points and cabling for faster and easier setup, IP cameras are also a most cost-effective and easily scalable solution than analogue CCTV systems.

Beside supporting a superior level of flexibility in terms of installation options, IP CCTV cameras also deliver a significantly higher image quality than analogue solutions, with megapixel HD-grade models recording evidence-grade footage that can be easily and rapidly stored onto a standalone network video recorder or on dedicated network storage and retrieved.

Furthermore, IP CCTV solutions can be integrated in a much more seamless fashion with other existing IT systems, in order to deliver centralised control and monitoring. Data from other security devices and from business systems can be associated with IP CCTV images and recordings to provide full ‘situational awareness’, while cameras can be easily controlled and monitored even from a web browser, due to the built-in remote operation capabilities.

CCTV Surveillance supplies a full range of IP CCTV cameras and network solutions, designed to meet and exceed and customer’s requirements, regardless of the site’s size, location or particular features.

  9. New Zealand Police consider upgrading to facial recognition CCTV systems

Comments Off on New Zealand Police consider upgrading to facial recognition CCTV systems

New Zealand’s police force is considering upgrading their CCTV systems to modern, facial recognition-capable ones, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

The force are looking to upgrade their surveillance gear to include “advanced facial recognition technology” able to be used through closed-circuit cameras.

With a network of CCTV cameras across the country, it would give criminals fewer places to hide. Also in the high-tech system would be suspects, prisoners, firearms licence details, missing people and those on the child sex offender register.

Police national forensics services manager Inspector John Walker said the new technology would allow “advanced facial recognition technology to assist in the identification of unknown offenders where a facial image is available for comparison – for example through CCTV”.

There was an objective that officers on the beat would be able to get photos directly to their phones, where they could show witnesses a series of images.
