Council-owned CCTV systems across Scotland are being switched off to save money

Vital CCTV systems in Scotland, which are currently used for cracking serious crimes and tracing missing people, are likely to be switched off as local councils struggle with the effect of budget cuts, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

Two councils, Midlothian and Inverclyde, have already put forward plans to ditch cameras, with politicians warning that more local authorities will follow suit.

Anti-terrorism experts described the plans as “madness”, warning that CCTV has been used to track bombers.

Other CCTV systems in Scotland are also under threat.

ScotRail plan to cut staff who monitor CCTV at stations. The train operator intend to make 22 staff redundant at centres in Paisley and Dunfermline.

A spokesman for council umbrella body Cosla said: “We are in talks with the Scottish Government regarding the spending review and will be presenting a strong case that local government cannot sustain further cuts, as experienced over the last two years, without significant impact on services and jobs, and the communities we serve to protect.”

Nineteen other councils in Scotland have said “No” to scrapping CCTV but seven have refused to rule it out.
