Local authorities in Northern Ireland spend £1.8m on new CCTV cameras

Local councils in Northern Ireland have spent an estimate of £1.8m deploying closed-circuit television cameras in the past three years, a news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

A report by Big Brother Watch found that nine councils spent £1,813,735 on installing, operating and maintaining their CCTV networks between 2012 and 2015. There are just over 200 surveillance cameras in operation in the region, excluding the Belfast, Antrim and Lisburn areas.

The highest expenses were recorded in Newry Mourne and Down, where the council spent an estimate of £381,549, while the lowest was recorded in Antrim and Newtownabbey, at around £42,110.
