Residents call for CCTV cameras to be installed around Leicester’s Rushey Fields Park

More than 600 residents have signed a petition calling on Leicester City Council to install surveillance CCTV cameras in Leicester’s Rushey Fields Park following a spate of crimes, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The Rushey Fields Residents Association called a crisis meeting where they put their concerns about violent crime and antisocial behaviour to police, councillors and Leicester West MP Keith Vaz.

Shanjeev Sharma, chairman of the residents association, said: “There is so much crime in the area, we feel the only solution is for the city council to install CCTV cameras. People living in the area have had enough. They should feel safe when using the park or local shops but they are afraid, especially after dark.

“That’s why we need CCTV. It would not only reassure people but would deter criminals, and provide evidence for the police if crime or antisocial behaviour is committed.”
