CCTV surveillance system installed at Spike Island in Cheshire

A new community CCTV system will be installed at Spike Island in Cheshire following a spate of attacks on swans in the area, a news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

Cameras have already been fitted at Catalyst overlooking the island, funded by Riverside, Appleton and Kingsway area forum.

The second phase will see CCTV installed along the canal where Catch 22 have a youth club and cafe and also cover the marina.

Furthermore, signs restricting dog owners to let their pets off leads will soon be erected at Spike Island and no dogs will be allowed in a children’s play area and dogs will have to be kept on leads near the canal.

Kingsway Cllr Pamela Wallace commented: “We have had requests from the public to do something to protect the swans and birds.

“We have also had problems with dog fouling, fly tipping and anti social behaviour.

“Incidents have now decreased. Spike Island is a lovely place to feed the swans, have a picnic, admire the boats and enjoy a walk.

“We are also attracting a lot of visitors to see the construction of the new Mersey Gateway bridge. We want people to feel safe and secure.”
