CCTV surveillance systems to tackle crime around 11 bus stops in Stoke-on-Trent

A local council has revealed plans to install 11 new CCTV camera systems around local bus stops in a bid to improve passengers’ safety and reduce incidents of vandalism.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council will use cash from the Department of Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund to pay for the cameras, which will cost around £3,000 each. The cameras will be placed at stops along the Hanley to Keele bus route.

Councillor Ruth Rosenau, cabinet member for transport, said the cameras would help improve safety for passengers.

She added: “Safety is our number one priority and we are installing CCTV cameras at 11 bus stops, between Keele University and the city centre.

“This will compliment the wifi and real-time passenger information that we will be providing on this route.”

According to Staffordshire Police there are no particular issues with crime or anti-social behaviour at bus stops along the Hanley-to-Keele route. However, the force said it welcomed any community projects which help residents feel safe.
