Kingston box junctions monitored by CCTV add 100,000 in fines in December

Kingston Council has managed to seriously bolster its coffers by installing CCTV monitoring systems in two busy box junctions and issuing fines to motorists, a news report in the local media suggests.

The two junctions netted Kingston Council a total of £254,037.50 in October and November after it started enforcing them with CCTV, while also adding another £100,000 in fines in December.

Each driver who fails to stop at the junction receives an £135 fine, halved if paid within two weeks. Nevertheless, in spite of the fact that these box junctions are designed to prevent gridlock in the town centre, quite a few motorists argue that they are being caught out unfairly or blocked in by other drivers.
