Workers at University Hospital of North Staffordshire demand CCTV system upgrade following bike theft

The theft of a £300 Carrera Crossfire cycle from a bike rack located on the premisses of the University Hospital of North Staffordshire has prompted employees to demand an upgrade of the CCTV system installed at the hospital, a news report has revealed.

The bike has been stolen on August 18, and the thief had also broken two padlocks. The owner called security to see if anyone suspicious had been caught on the cameras but she was told none were positioned to oversee the bike rack.

Now, the owner claims the security breach is stopping others from cycling to work at a time when the trust is trying to promote more environmentally-friendly modes of transport to help free up scarce parking spaces.

A trust spokesman said: “We are committed to maintaining a safe and secure working environment for staff. CCTV cameras are positioned around the site which are monitored internally and externally 24 hours per day while patrols by security guards and police take place on a regular basis to deter potential thieves.”

“We are working to provide additional secure facilities for staff and members of the public to store their bicycles as part of our policy to provide sustainable transport alternatives” he added.
